Urban planning is a crucial discipline that shapes the sustainable development of cities, ensuring climate-conscious and long-term improvements in urban spaces. The Urban Planning in Frankfurt UAS program is designed for students interested in interdisciplinary, spatial, and networked fields of urban development.
This sought-after degree equips students with the skills to design urban spaces, develop planning strategies, and implement sustainable solutions that benefit both private and public sectors. With growing urbanization and increasing environmental challenges, the demand for skilled urban planners has never been higher.
The six-semester bachelor’s program, available only in the winter semester with a maximum of 36 students, covers a wide range of subjects, ensuring a comprehensive education. Students delve into socio-cultural, ecological, and technical aspects of urban planning, alongside topics such as urban architecture, mobility, politics, and economics.
The curriculum is designed to provide students with the ability to analyze complex urban challenges and propose effective solutions. Additionally, students are trained in communication and mediation, allowing them to facilitate discussions between specialists, policymakers, and community members to achieve sustainable urban development goals.
A key feature of the program is its practical project-based approach. Each semester, students work on a significant study project that varies in scale, from buildings and neighborhoods to entire cities and regions. These projects offer real-world experience and prepare students for professional challenges in urban development.
Complementing these projects are lectures, seminars, and exercises in crucial areas such as the History and Theory of Urban Planning, Sustainability and Ecology, Transportation and Urban Infrastructure, and Presentation and Scientific Work. Beyond classroom learning, students participate in excursions, city walks, and on-site investigations to gain firsthand insights into urban spaces and planning strategies.
One of the most valuable aspects of the program is its mobility window in the fourth or fifth semester, which offers students the chance to spend a semester abroad at one of Frankfurt UAS’s many partner universities worldwide.
This international exposure helps students develop a global perspective on urban planning and fosters cross-cultural exchange of ideas and methodologies. Additionally, students engage in portfolio examinations, written and graphic work, as well as oral and written tests, ensuring a well-rounded academic experience.
Admission to the program follows a competitive NC procedure, and applicants must meet Fachabitur/Abitur requirements. Additionally, proof of English language proficiency at B1 level is required upon enrollment. This can be demonstrated through a high school diploma if the language level B1 or B2 is explicitly listed. Applications for the winter semester 2025/26 are expected to open in June 2025, with a deadline of July 15th.
Due to the program’s limited intake, early application is recommended for those seeking a place in this competitive field. Graduates of the program enjoy excellent career prospects. Urban planners are highly sought after in the public sector, working in municipal planning and development offices, as well as in private firms specializing in architecture, landscape design, and urban planning. Their expertise is essential for shaping sustainable and resilient cities.
Moreover, graduates who pursue a Master’s degree in urban planning and acquire two years of relevant professional experience can qualify for the protected professional title of “urban planner”, opening doors to higher-level career opportunities and leadership roles in the field. With its interdisciplinary curriculum, hands-on projects, international study opportunities, and strong career prospects, the Urban Planning in Frankfurt UAS program is an ideal choice for aspiring urban planners dedicated to shaping the cities of the future.
